Meet The Sisters Of The Valley: California’s Cannabis-Growing, Medicine-Making Outlaw Nuns

Weed nunsMeet The Sisters Of The Valley: California’s Cannabis-Growing, Medicine-Making Outlaw Nuns

How the Trump Administration is causing trouble for the peaceful Sisters Of The Valley, California’s medicine-making “weed nuns.”

The Sisters of the Valley farm is a one-acre plot wedged in California’s sprawling, agriculture-rich Central Valley, about 10 miles outside of the city of Merced’s limits.

On first glance it looks a lot like the other farms in the area, those that grow almonds, carrots, blueberries, and other wholesome crops.

A narrow, worn-out asphalt road sandwiched between two enormous almond groves leads to an idyllic plot; there’s a garage-turned-greenhouse and two light blue ranch houses: one where the farmers live and eat, and one known as “the abbey” that serves as the base of business operations.

Is apple cider vinegar really a wonder food?

apple cider

Folk medicine has favoured apple cider vinegar for centuries and many claims are made for its supposed benefits.

Apple cider vinegar is made by chopping apples, covering them with water and leaving them at room temperature until the natural sugars ferment and form ethanol. Bacteria then convert this alcohol into acetic acid.

Strands of a “mother” will form in the cider. These are strained out of many products but left in others, and are often the target of health claims. The “mother” can also be used to start the production of the next batch of cider.

But will apple cider vinegar really help you lose weight, fight heart disease, control blood sugar and prevent cancer? And what about claims it is rich in enzymes and nutrients such as potassium?

This Super-Cheap Superfood Will Balance Your Blood Sugar ASAP

seaweedAgar agar, arame, kombu, hijiki, nori, dulse, wakame. To many Americans, the names of these glorious greens (and browns and reds) are unfamiliar. But sea vegetables (aka seaweeds) have been a staple in coastal regions around the globe—from Japan to Iceland, Ireland to the Pacific islands—for centuries, and for good reason.

Sea vegetables are really green, brown, and red marine algae, and there are thousands of types, but only a few dozen varieties are in wide consumption. Although Americans have been slow to catch on to the culinary value of sea vegetables, they are finally starting to appear in the mainstream as additions to soups, salads, and even on pizza.

I think they’re poised to be the next kale. Here’s why. https://app.quuu.co/r/rorgnab

One of the biggest trends in nutrition right now is clean eating — basically, it’s the idea that consuming whole, unprocessed foods prepared as naturally as possible is the key to a successful diet.

Within five minutes of browsing the web, you can pretty much find all the information you need to know about how to incorporate clean eating into your lifestyle, but we were surprised to learn how little info was available about how to incorporate healthy drinking habits into our lives.

I mean, we love a glass of ice water as much as the next person, but surely we’re not expected to drink nothing but water with every meal… right?

As we begin preparing ourselves for an ambitious clean eating challenge this February by ridding our kitchens of added sugars and processed foods, we’ve decided to give our favorite beverages an overhaul too.

Here are 11 sugar-loaded drinks that we’re purging from our fridges to cut back on our sugar intake and quit drinking our calories for good.

Uric-acid-crystalGout and Uric Acid How to Lower Uric Acid Levels

Lowering uric acid levels is the key to finding relief for gout sufferers –but how does one lower uric acid levels in the body? Read on to find out.

The average person will have low uric acid levels in their blood. The body produces it when breaking down purines, which is a type of chemical compound found in foods and drinks.

When uric acid builds up in the bloodstream, it consists of a condition called hyperuricemia. If you have hyperuricemia, you are at a higher risk to develop gout. This is why doctors advise gout patients to avoid high purine foods.

Stress accounts for 75 percent of all doctor visits

Walking into an average office, it’s easy to pinpoint a handful of people who are unwell. When so many are juggling a hectic job, family life and bills, it’s easy for people to struggle to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many of us wonder how to relieve stress but feel too overwhelmed to start.

Up to a certain point, stress is something that challenges us and helps us grow. However, stress levels build over time to the point when stress makes us chronically unhappy and physically sick. Too much stress leaves no room for your body and mind to rejuvenate, leading to wear and tear.

High stress levels are a major problem: the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that stress accounts for 75 percent of all doctor visits. Steps need to be taken in order to safeguard your mental health and release the pressure on your emotional and physical resources. Click to read more https://app.quuu.co/r/npproll

Prebiotics 101: What They Are, What They Do, and Where You Can Find Them

You’ve probably heard of probiotics, living microorganisms that support a healthy digestive tract. Eating them, or having them inside your gut, can help your digestive system function more efficiently and may contribute to a healthier immune system, among other health benefits.

But have you heard of prebiotics?

According to the official definition, a prebiotic is any substance used by microorganisms inside the body that confers health benefits. Translation: prebiotics are beneficial microbes’ food. While researchers are still learning about their full potential to boost overall health or even treat disease, one thing is for certain—adding more prebiotics to your diet can give you a happier gut.

How prebiotics work

Most prebiotics are types of dietary fiber, which is a kind of carbohydrate that human enzymes can’t digest. Not every fiber is a prebiotic, however, because there are two categories of dietary fiber: soluble fiber, which is fermented by gut bacteria, and insoluble fiber, which is not fermented. The soluble fibers that are metabolized by beneficial gut microbes are considered prebiotics. Inside your gut, prebiotics stimulate beneficial gut microbes to grow, improving gut health—and other areas of health, too.

Some prebiotics come from sources besides food and impact parts of the body beyond the gastrointestinal tract, but most of the ones we know about are found in food.

Can you get your protein from peas?

peasThe benefits of eating plant-based foods are many, including weight loss, increased cardiovascular health and reduced risk for high blood pressure, cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.

Despite the evidence, many people are still concerned that a diet of mainly plant-based foods won’t be nutritionally complete, especially when it comes to protein.

It’s understandable. The meat protein message has been handed down for generations, and the proteins in plants aren’t considered sufficient enough to meet dietary needs. But, the truth about protein is that you can get enough of it from plants if you eat a variety of them.

One vegetable that’s high in protein is the pea. One cup of green peas has 8 grams of protein. One half cup of cooked split peas (a type of field pea) also contains 8 grams of protein.

Peas are taking their place next to whey and soy as smart way to add plant-based protein to your diet. One added benefit is that pea protein doesn’t have the allergen concerns posed by whey or soy, although people with gout are advised to stay away from peas.

Becoming Present in a Mind and World Full of Chaos

3 Powerful Grounding Techniques for Everyday LifeThink about our world today. We have cell phones, Tweets, perpetual notifications and 24 hour news.

There has never been this much constant stimuli at any point in history. Don’t forget that we are evolutionary beings; our bodies haven’t quite caught up to it all yet. And…will it ever?

With all of the constant information in the digital age, reconnecting with yourself has never been more important. It’s not just for Highly Sensitive People anymore–it’s for everyone.

The techniques I want to share with you are ‘grounding techniques’. When you say the word “grounding” to yourself, what does it feel like? Personally, it makes me feel more peaceful, connected, and present in my mind, body, and soul. But I can imagine that it might create some resistance if you’ve only heard of it in spiritual circles. I can tell you that times ARE changing and that grounding techniques are now being incorporated into the therapeutic and business world and I hope that we will be teaching it more and more in schools!

Why? Because they work!

As a Highly Sensitive Person, it has been the biggest gifts I have given myself. Moments of grounding thoughout my day. Mini bliss moments….

It is one of the many self-care practices that I have incorporated in everyday life to make sure that I don’t burnout ever again. Because, well, 3 times before my 32nd birthday is enough.

So what exactly is “grounding”, and how can it help you reduce stress, come back to the moment, and bring back ease and flow into your world?

Grounding just means bringing yourself out of your head and into your body. It’s reestablishing a connection between the mind, the body, and the soul so that you are present in your body rather than trapped in your ego driven thoughts.

How does grounding help? When you connect to your body, you connect to the present moment. You see what’s in front of you and respond from a place of alignment rather than a place of anxiety, depression, or fear. In this moment, all is well.

Let’s say that out of the blue you’re confronted with an unexpected challenge. If you find yourself stuck in your head instead being present in the moment, panic might take over before you know it. And just like that, your head is creating a story based on what it THINKS is going on.

But when you’re able to ground yourself, you aren’t stuck in your head anymore. You connect with what is truly happening rather than what you imagine is happening. And you can respond from a place of alignment rather than a place of panic.

Sounds like a better alternative, doesn’t it?

So how do you make this magical practice work for you?

Benefits of Avocado (and 25 Avocado Recipes)

Avocado-benefits-and-healthy-recipesThere are many benefits of avocados and avocado oil and they have gained massive popularity in recent years…and for good reason!

Avocados are a decadent and versatile fruit that is great in many recipes. They have a delicious, creamy richness that really satisfies, whether in a dip, on a salad, or blended in a dessert. You can’t help but feel like you’re indulging!

Maybe what adds to the satisfaction is knowing you’re getting a great dose of nutrition to boot!

Nutrition and Benefits of Avocado

Avocados are somewhat unique in the fruit world. It could even be said that avocados are one of the fattiest foods out there…but in a good sense!

They make every calorie and fat gram worthwhile since they are extremely nutrient dense. An avocado contains over 20 vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C, vitamin B-6, magnesium, and potassium. In fact, a cup of pureed avocado contains almost four times more potassium than a whole banana.

Avocado Nutrients

Even just 1/5th of an avocado contains:

  • Vitamin K: 26% of the RDA
  • Folate: 20% of the RDA
  • Vitamin B5: 14% of the RDA
  • Vitamin C: 17% of the RDA
  • Potassium: 14% of the RDA
  • Vitamin B6: 13% of the RDA
  • Vitamin E: 10% of the RDA

Then it contains small amounts of Magnesium, Manganese, Copper, Iron, Zinc, Phosphorous, Vitamin A, B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin) and B3 (Niacin). (1)

On top of this, studies show the healthy fats in avocado make the anti-inflammatory carotenoids found in brightly colored vegetables and fruits more bioavailable. So a little diced avocado on your salad both tastes good and helps you get the most nutrition out of your leafy greens, peppers, tomatoes, and other salad fixings!

But you might ask, won’t all that fat make me…fat?

To the contrary!

Avocado Calories

A single serving of avocado contains 50 calories and 4.5 grams of fat (and that’s just in 1/5th of an avocado). I’d say our family tends to eat more like ½ an avocado per individual serving, which makes it 130 calories and 15 grams of fat.

Although this may seem like a lot of fat and calories, studies show that avocado consumption can actually help control cholesterol and weight:

Avocados’ are a medium energy dense fruit because about 80% of the avocado edible fruit consists of water (72%) and dietary fiber (6.8%) and has been shown to have similar effects on weight control as low-fat fruits and vegetables (USDA, 2011; Bes-Rastrollo et al., 2008).

An analysis of adult data from the NHANES 2001–2006 suggests that avocado consumers have higher HDL-cholesterol, lower risk of metabolic syndrome, and lower weight, BMI, and waist circumference than nonconsumers (Fulgoni et al., 2010b). (2)

They can also help with food cravings by replacing that rich and creamy element you might be missing when eliminating dairy and other high calorie, low nutrient foods from your diet.

THC Makes Cannabis Ideal for Treating Asthma, Study Shows

CannabisFor many , the idea of cannabis being used as an asthma treatment can feel a bit backwards. After all, one of the most common ways cannabis is ingested is by smoking, a method that would seem to be detrimental to those with asthma. However, recent studies have found that cannabis in any form (even smoked) can greatly benefit those suffering from the symptoms of asthma.

Can Marijuana Treat Asthma?

First let’s take a closer look at asthma and what it actually means to have it. Asthma is a fairly common lung disease that results in the narrowing of the airway passage. Due to this narrowing, those suffering from asthma frequently experience feeling out of breath, wheezing or uncontrollable coughing.

While treatment can be used to reduce the effects patients with asthma experience, there is currently no cure for the condition. Asthma attacks can come in many forms and can be triggered by a number of factors including allergies or exercise. While asthma doesn’t reduce your life expectancy, being caught in an intense asthma attack without the proper treatment can be fatal.

So how does a substance that can be smoked help treat asthma? The explanation can be found by examining where asthma begins. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease, while cannabis is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory effects. This means cannabis works in an opposite effect to other substances like tobacco and can actually help expand the lungs instead of constricting them

Destress Your Life At Work

It seems as though these days, stress levels are skyrocketing through the roof. Am I right?

No wonder that yoga, Pilates and meditation are a growing fad – the demand for their stress-busting abilities is increasing!

For many who work in offices eight hours a day, or sit long hours staring at phone and computer screens, it seems as though there is little to be done about that lingering lack of clarity and balance that everyone so desperately needs.

That is where the majority of people who suffer stress are sadly mistaken. Especially for those that have families, social obligations, or other activities that seem to pile up after work, why not try to incorporate some balance AT work? Sounds impossible, but it really isn’t.

Sitting at a desk doesn’t hinder anyone’s ability to force a little bit of tranquility into their lives. Bite Size Wellness has put together a list of breathing exercises and poses to do in any workplace that allow a little “me” time into a jam-packed schedule. A few minutes is all you need to stay relaxed!

Try these exercises and poses between e-mails, during your lunch break, or head to the office ten minutes early. If you don’t want to do this in front of anyone, head to a bathroom stall, a hallway, or somewhere where you can get five minutes of peace.
